Breaking Bread is a week-long series of events exploring a broader definition of sustainability through novel perspectives such as food, culture, faith, and community. While “sustainability” is often thought of in scientific or policy terms, the concept has embedded values that offer the opportunity to build bridges across communities that might otherwise not consider themselves as part of a shared ethos. Co-sponsored by the Office of Sustainability and the Center for Spirituality, Dialogue, and Service at Northeastern University, Breaking Bread invites the Northeastern University community to consider what sustainability means to them, and importantly, what it can mean.

 

Monday, April 12th

“The Path to Climate Justice” 
  12-1pm EDT

  • Join leading Northeastern faculty for a discussion on the important links between the climate crisis and social justice. Energy justice and climate researchers and activists Jennie Stephens, Frances Roberts-Gregory, and Brian Helmuth will lead a conversation about climate justice action and how to effectively connect knowledge to action during these disruptive times.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers presents an Energy Panel with Form Energy & Lutron

Common Cathedral Sandwich Making with CSDS (6-7pm EDT)

  • CSDS will be hosting a night of sandwich and card making for our neighbors at Common Cathedral- an outdoor ministry who brings together the unhoused and housed. They will be making 50 sandwiches turkey, turkey and cheese, and cheese.

“Why You Can’t Make Sustainable Buildings Without Building Science”  with John Straube, Ph.D., P.Eng.
6-7pm EDT

  • Hosted by NUSBO: Northeastern University Sustainable Building Organization.
  • Description: There are many approaches taken to meeting the need for more sustainable buildings. Too many “green” or “sustainable” design choices are based on myth, feelings, even innuendo. The results are not just buildings that are less sustainable than they could be, but outright building failures.  To be effective, the choices and decisions made during design must be based on a rational assessment. Building science is the body of technical knowledge that supports effective decision making. The presentation will introduce building science as a discipline and explore real world examples of sustainable building design: from earth plastered strawbale, failed “all natural” schools, to low-carbon institutional design.
  • About the Presenter: John Straube, Ph.D., P.Eng., is a Principal at RDH Building Science, where he conducts forensic investigations, assists with the design of new high performance buildings, and leads research projects in the areas of low-energy building design, building enclosure performance, hygrothermal analysis, and field performance monitoring. Dr. Straube is also a cross-appointed faculty member in the School of Architecture and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He was a Principal at Building Science Corporation from 2006 to 2013, and is the author or co-author of over 100 published technical papers, author of the book High Performance Enclosures and co-author, with Eric Burnett, of Building Science for Building Enclosures. Dr. Straube’s leadership as a building scientist and an educator has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in Building Science Education from the National Consortium of Housing Research Centers (NCHRC).

NU Mutual Aid Community Fridge Grand Opening

  • Leave what you can, take what you need! Stop by the Northeastern Hillel Center (70 St. Stephen st.) to celebrate the opening of our community fridge. Donations are always needed! Especially canned goods and fresh produce.

Bibimbap Cooking Tutorial and Sustainability and Faith Dialogue with Harim Lee
6-7pm EDT

  • Introducing “bibimbap”, a traditional South Korean dish that is loved by a lot of people. On Friday, Harim Lee of the group “Youth With A Mission” will be sharing a bibimbap cooking tutorial video as well as hosting an open dialogue on Friday at 6pm EDT on sustainability and faith. In the spirit of putting sustainability into practice, Harim’s recipe will be vegan and gluten-free.
