Address Northeastern’s impact on local housing

Northeastern’s 2013 Institutional Master Plan (IMP) committed the university to the creation of 1,000 new housing units and an update to its Housing Impact Study to examine any changes in the impacts of Northeastern students in rental housing stock. With the completion of LightView and planned construction of a similar residential property at 840 Columbus Avenue, Northeastern will complete and exceed these commitments. In addition, Northeastern will contribute $1 million to the city’s Department of Neighborhood Development to be used to advance housing stabilization and wealth creation in the immediately adjacent neighborhoods of the project. Northeastern is currently developing its next IMP and intends to build on these past commitments and efforts to focus on housing stabilization in the neighborhood.

Direct our linkage funds to neighboring communities

DESCRIPTION
Work with the City of Boston to ensure linkage funds associated with Northeastern development projects (EXP and 840 Columbus Avenue) go towards the creation of affordable housing in neighborhoods adjacent to Northeastern who are most burdened by the housing crisis. At present, linkage funds, which are payments associated with development that are required by the City of Boston, go to two central funding pools: the Neighborhood Housing Trust and Neighborhood Jobs Trust.

Increase university housing supply

DESCRIPTION
Increase the supply of affordable and attractive housing options to attract students to live on-campus, lessening the burden on surrounding neighborhoods. This can be done through several ways, including building more university housing, renovating existing housing, and partnering with entities such as developers or other universities.
