Invest in community economic development, housing, and well-being

With each Institutional Master Plan (IMP) we enter a Cooperation Agreement with the City of Boston that commits us to make investments in the surrounding community to address impacts from our campus development. While some community benefits associated with the Cooperation Agreement are physical in nature, such as Northeastern’s more than $100 million put towards the revitalization of Carter Playground, other investments contribute to social infrastructure, such as the 236 scholarships available each year to Boston students, delivery of over 63,000 student volunteer service hours, and the creation of jobs.

CJAP Actions

Expand local access to a Northeastern education

DESCRIPTION
Continue the University’s commitment to local scholarships and ensure that local residents have visibility in how to apply. Lean into continuing education opportunities for local residents, such as through the experiential Associates to Master’s (eA2M) program which provides students with some college credit an opportunity to earn their degree at Northeastern.

Track and report community commitments

DESCRIPTION
Create a transparent process to align the forthcoming Institutional Master Plan’s (IMP) Cooperation Agreement with climate justice priorities and track and report progress towards specific outcomes. Specifically, work with the CJAP Steering Committee to invest in community funds that align with the principles of Social Movement Investing. To help with this, the university will encourage members of the CJAP Steering Committee to serve on the City-appointment Northeastern University IMP Task Force.

Review investments in fossil fuel and extractive industries with an eye towards alternative investment strategies that generate returns based on positive long-term impacts

DESCRIPTION
A transition towards environmental and social positive investments will align the use of university funds with academic and research priorities, and will reduce risk to the university brand. This transition, combined with greater transparency of the university’s financial investments, will help demonstrate the commitment to supporting sustainable outcomes as well as local and regenerative economies. Invite students and faculty to provide input into new strategies and feedback on how investments reflect on the university from student, faculty, and community perspectives.
