Wondering how to live more sustainably and make an impact on the environment and in your community? Check out these tips to help you save money and improve your overall health and wellbeing while reducing your carbon footprint.  

Buy Second-Hand

Buy second-hand at the Trash2Treasure sale, Goodwill in Roxbury, Boomerangs in JP and Cambridge, Buffalo Exchange in Brookline, Garment District in Cambridge or other second-hand shops.

Cook With Zero Waste

Avoid wasting food. Plan your meals and learn how to cook with zero waste. Designate an area of your fridge as an “Eat Me First” section to ensure no leftovers go to waste.

Blue Bikes

Walk or Bike when possible and check out NU’s Blue Bikes Membership Discount.

Boston Community Choice Electricity

Opt into Boston Community Choice Electricity, a program of the City of Boston that provides affordable and renewable electricity to the program’s customers.

Purchasing

Use your purchasing power to buy second-hand, reduce packaging, and save money. 

  • Buy second-hand at the Trash2Treasure sale, Goodwill in Roxbury, Boomerangs in JP and Cambridge, Buffalo Exchange in Brookline, Garment District in Cambridge or other second-hand shops.
  • Buy in bulk to reduce packaging.
  • Shop local and at Farmer’s Markets. Students eligible for SNAP (food stamps) receive extra dollars at Farmer’s Markets.

    Resource Conservation

    Buildings are responsible for two-thirds of GHG emissions in Boston. Help conserve energy and water while also considering renewable options.

    • Opt into Boston Community Choice Electricity, a program of the City of Boston that provides affordable and renewable electricity to the program’s customers.
    • Opt for a smart power strip to reduce energy consumption.
    • Unplug appliances and technology when not in use.
    • Learn about Boston Heat Assistance Programs.
    • Be conscious of your water usage and avoid water waste.

    Transportation

    Transportation makes up nearly a third of all GHG emissions in Boston. Use these resources to avoid driving or taking an uber whenever possible.  

    • Northeastern partners with the City of Boston’s Blue Bikes share system to provide discounted annual memberships for Northeastern Community.
      • To enroll, visit the Blue Bikes website. Once there, click “Join.” Select “I’m eligible for a Group/Corporate Discount” and choose “Northeastern University.” Enter program code “HUSKY.”
    • Take the T and sign up for the MBTA Student Discounted Semester Pass
    • If you need a car, Good2Go is an electric carshare program located in Columbus Garage. They offer income-tiered hourly rates.

    Compost at home

    The City of Boston offers two different options for composting. One with free curbside pickup for buildings with 6 or less units and one called Project Oscar that has drop-off locations around the City.

    Reduce Waste

    Reduce waste and resources by bringing your reusable water bottle, utensils and food containers to campus. You can also get takeout food from the dining halls in the reusable Ozzi containers
